Calling all StageSiders, welcome back to another review here at StageSideUK. This time, we joined everyone’s favourite mischievous feline as The Cat in the Hat arrived at Darlington Hippodrome for the final stop of its UK tour (Or so we thought!). If you are looking for a show to take the family to, particularly if you have younger children, stick around!

Touring the UK this year, Sam Bradshaw Productions is bringing the naughtiest cat to a town or city near you. Bringing the wonderfully whimsical world of Dr. Seuss to life is no easy task, but this production captures the playful spirit of the beloved story with charm, imagination and plenty of laughter.
Designed for audiences aged three and above, the production runs for just 45 minutes, and I honestly think that’s the show’s greatest strength. The children in the audience were hooked throughout and you could tell they left with just enough energy in the tank to get them home. If the show was longer, I wonder if they would have maybe began to fidget.
We all know younger audiences can have shorter attention spans, and this production understands its audience perfectly. At no point does it outstay its welcome, instead delivering a fast-paced and fun adventure that keeps little ones engaged.
From the moment the Cat bounds onto the stage, the show embraces the controlled chaos that has made the story such a timeless classic. It’s energetic without becoming overwhelming, playful without feeling frantic, and constantly invites children to become part of the adventure. Games, music and plenty of Dr. Seuss magic combine to create an experience that feels wonderfully interactive, encouraging laughter and participation throughout.
What impressed me most was how well the production balanced excitement with storytelling. It would have been easy for the show to rely solely on high-energy antics, but beneath the chaos is a clear narrative that younger audiences can easily follow and one that they can related to as well. Every game and every mischievous moment serves the story, making the experience feel cohesive rather than simply a collection of activities.
The cast bring infectious enthusiasm to every scene, fully embracing the larger-than-life characters that live in Dr. Seuss’ colourful world. Their energy never dips, and that commitment helps maintain the attention of even the youngest audience members. Watching children react with excitement, laughter and amazement throughout the performance was a reminder of just how magical live theatre can be when it’s created with its audience firmly in mind.
As the final stop on the tour, the company showed no signs of slowing down. The performance felt every bit as fresh and energetic as you would hope, and what is great is the show is now stopping at three further theatres in 2026. The Cat In The Hat explores more of the UK.
Accessibility
The production features music, audience participation and moments of controlled chaos throughout. The show also contains actors in the audience, surround sound and large inflatable balls that the audience throws around.
Value for Money
With a running time of around 45 minutes, I was a little worried it was going to be a cash grab for families. This was not the case! The show contains set, costume, lighting, sound and some great entertainment! The show keeps young audiences entertained from start to finish without ever losing their attention. Adult tickets were around £16 and children get concession tickets.
