Calling all StageSiders, welcome back to another review here at StageSideUK. This time around we are talking about Dirty Old Town ’24 which played the Durham Fringe Festival.
Disclaimer: we were gifted two tickets in exchange for an honest review.
Dirty Old Town ’24 is an interactive, stand up comedy set, presented by Marigold. Marigold’s ability to command an audience is impressive, and though the audience was small at this late night show, Marigold got us all creating sound effects and having discussions around pop culture.
The show does have a structure, and so it veers from the typical stand up comedy, call and response show. Dirty Old Town ’24 is a bold, brave and bonkers production, in which Marigold discusses Love, Loss, Assault, Violence and the odd bit of train ticket fraud (We’ve all done it (THIS IS A JOKE).
The best part of the show was the interaction, and for someone who usually hates interactive theatre, Marigold clearly spent alot of time on this. Being chosen to admire her neeps and tatties was a first for gay old me, but a memory I will carry with me.
Marigold’s show Dirty Old Town is a great introduction to Stand Up mixed with theatre, for those who are not yet ready to dive into a full stand up show. Her energy is admirable, and the space instantly feels warm, safe and comfortable. Even in those dark moments within the set, Marigold has us laughing and having our say.
I strongly believe this show would THRIVE with a large audience, and it would be amazing to see it full. However, I think due to the time slot and location of the show, the audience we saw the show with was 8 people strong. Nevertheless, we had a great time, laughed until we cried and then cried until we laughed.
I would strongly recommend catching Dirty Old Town ’24 when it pulls up to your local theatre, bar or comedy club. Very much worth the trip!
