Calling all StageSider’s, welcome back to another review here at StageSideUK. This time around, we are talking about the toe tapping tunes presented by the Wild Murphs! We got to see One Night In Dublin at the Darlington Hippodrome, and we had a night full of tunes and some comedy! Settle in, the review is about to begin!
The music!
One Night In Dublin is advertised as an Irish Music Tribute Show, and that is exactly what you get. Irish music, and tribute numbers. The instrumentals are amazing, the pure musical talent on that stage was brilliant to watch. I would have liked to have understood the lyrics, as the singer seemed to cut off the lines quite early, missing out half of the word at the end. When I got in the car, I listened to Molly Malone to hear what was actually sung and I could understand that perfectly fine, so I think diction and projection needs to be focused on when it comes to the next tour. I love Irish music, I just wish I could hear the actual lyrics.
The singing sounded nice, the harmonies were great and we had such a fun night out. If you’re looking for a night of music, instrumentals and sing along tunes then One Night In Dublin will give you all of that! You will be clapping, singing and shuffling in your seat!
Visuals
What I will say, is it is also advertised as high energy and I think that is true, but I do think there could be something a bit more visual to look at. After a while, with alot of the arrangements sounding similar, you didn’t really need to look at the stage because the format is musicians playing to each other. It felt a bit like there was something theatrical missing. Maybe some dancers or something, it would have just elevated it, and kept my attention. I won’t lie I did find myself losing focus in the second half, but I think it is because there wasn’t anything for me to particularly focus on.
Is the show bad? Absolutely not! I just think there needs to be something to watch, as well as listen.
Now onto the ratings!
Entertainment:
This show was fun. There were some really talented musicians, there were some great song choices and some of the arrangements and instrumentals were beautiful to listen to. I think there was something visual missing, but as a music fan but not an irish music Fanatic, I enjoyed the music but did zone out some times. If there was that visual element, perhaps I would have been focused throughout. I think the show was fun and did what it said on the tin though, so I give it four out of five stars because it was entertaining, but I did lose focus.
Value for money
I was invited to see this show by the Wild Murphys, and I really appreciate being invited. It was a fun night and I am excited to see One Night In Texas, the country music show!
The seats for one night in Dublin were around £20-£29 each, which isnt bad for the show. I think if there was that visual element, it would have given even more value for money, but you certainly get what you pay for. I think the show does what it says it will and you pay a fair price for it. 100%live band and it was great. I give the show four out of five stars for value for money.
Accessibility
This show was loud but it wasn’t too overbearing. The audience were louder than the singers on stage, that is the only part that had me a bit overwhelmed. There is lighting on the audience that rises, so if youre sat in the back stalls or circle, you may have lights shining on you at some point. Other than that, it was pretty accessible.
Overall
I can see why this show is successful and has the following it does, I think to really REALLY enjoy it you have to be quite a big irish music fan. I don’t know if this is one of those shows you can go to if you don’t know alot of the music, because I didnt and I found myself not understanding the lyrics and now being able to sing along. There was just a bit of disconnect with me personally, but the show was well received and I still had fun so I give the show 4 out of 5 stars! Well done to the Wild Murphys
