Hello everyone,
So today I thought we could start a discussion / conversation about our favourite musical. By this I mean a production that uses song as part of the dialogue or plot (Opera’s will be a future discussion topic). Classic or modern, Jukebox or Book musical, I am interested in hearing what your favourite musical is and why.
My favourite musical is Godspell. Godspell was the first musical I had seen where I had to buy the ticket myself. It will always have a special place in my heart, and I still have the ticket somewhere I believe.
I saw this musical in secondary school, it was a touring production and I loved it. The music was different in comparison to the other musicals I had heard at that time. It wasn’t all, samey samey, there was a mix and match vibe to the show. The aesthetics were so pleasing and it was a really impressive show.

Picking a favourite musical is like asking me which meal of the day I prefer. All of them?!
But after thinking long and hard about it I’ve decided on Rocky Horror Show as my all time favourite musical. I remember watching the film quite young and although I didn’t really understand it I remember been fascinated by the music, costume and especially the characters. So it was always a favourite growing up. But it wasn’t untilI I was doing a module in Musical Theatre as part of my drama degree that I really began appreciating the stage version. The stage musical came before the film and still is one of the most popular touring shows . I’d be inclined to say it’s Britain’s most cult musical. I realised that it’s actually a beautiful story about the American dream, it’s about sex and relationships, it’s about drugs, it’s about diversity and about being comfortable in your own body.

Brilliant choice! Like you I also watched it quite early on and I also didn’t really understand the deeper meaning to the film. If I am honest, I remember Tim Curry used to give me nightmares xD that amount of eyeshadow was just spine chilling even at 10 years old. I love The Rocky Horror Show and think it’s a brilliant choice for favourite musical. Dare I ask, do you like the film or live version better? I think I like the film better than the stage show only because of the emotions and decisions attached to the film and how shockingly amazing it was at the time.
I think musicals that are open and rich, like Rocky Horror, are amazing as each member of the audience walks away with something different.
