Calling all StageSider’s, welcome back to another Favourite Friday here at StageSideUK. I hope you are all doing well and managing to see lots of interesting theatre out there. There have been some amazing shows come out lately, whether they have been revamped classics or brand new shows. It made me look back at my collection of programmes and wonder what the best set I have seen, was. So this Favourite Friday we are talking about all things set design.
We want to know what was the best set you have seen. We are talking the best, however you define that, set pieces or complete set design.
My favourite set design was for National Theatres Jane Eyre in 2017. Michael Vale did such a good job designing this show. One of my favourite performances, visually, and as a huge fan of Jane Eyre, this was a true dream. It was a great performance to see.
The stripped back nature, the bare scaffolding poles and the physical theatre that happened around the set blended perfectly with the content of the novel. I think the set designer really did a great job at capturing an image of a grand and extravagant house, and then presented it as scaffolding. Just… chefs kiss.
