Calling all StageSiders, welcome back to another review here at StageSideUK. This time around we are talking about Cirque: The Greatest Show, which played at the Darlington Hippodrome on September 15th. Strap yourselves in for this one, its intense!
Let me start by giving a huge shout out to the incredible dancers who commanded the stage with their passion and dedication. From the first number to the final bow, it was evident that these performers enjoyed every minute of that show, and had poured their hearts and souls into every step and every movement. Well done to the dancers for their outstanding commitment and a job very well done!
The circus acts were nothing short of daring and brave. I mean, I don’t know how a person can hang by their head, from a rope, while spinning… What? There were some amazing acts shown, such as quick changes, aerial acrobatics and roller skating. I did however feel like some of the acts could’ve been taken to even greater heights (sometimes literally). They were still incredibly impressive and left me on the edge of my seat, but having that little bit extra would have been amazing. I am such a greedy audience member, I know.
Now, let’s talk about the vocals. While I’m all for adding variety to a show, I have to admit that the vocal performances left me a tad confused. They seemed a bit disconnected from the overall flow of the show. The musical theatre ballads (from Moulin Rouge, Hairspray, Miss Saigon and The Greatest Showman) seemed to come from nowhere and didn’t add to the story or progression. I think the show would have been completely fine without the vocal elements, and I dare say it may have been better without.
But hey, when you have such extraordinary dancing and astonishing circus acts… we have had our fill.
Now onto the ratings:
Cirque: The Greatest Show was a night to remember, for sure. The dedication of the dancers, the daring circus acts, and the overall energy of the performance made it an exciting experience. I have to take my hat off, as I could never do half of the things I have seen during Cirque. A well done to the cast and crew for their commitment to the show and their energy. I would give the show three out of five stars. The dancers and acts were so commited, but the show felt a bit off. Part musical, part cabaret act, I think this cast and show get an A for effort, but the application is a bit confusing.
