Hello all! I hope you are all well and staying safe. The favourite Friday post’s have been going well. I love learning more about what you like and what your favourite (blank) is. But I thought I would do something a bit different for today’s discussion post. And so today’s discussion topic isn’t a ‘favourite’ question, instead it’s one that requires some thought.
If you had to see only one actor play every role forever, who would you choose? Meaning, one actor plays all of the roles in all shows forever. No other performers. No other cast. Just them forever.
I think that my choice would be Matt Henry. His time as Lola and his albums have kept me entertained for years. With the amount of theatre I like to watch, I am sure he will be tired. But that is the way the game is played.

If I was answering this questions this time last year, it would be a totally different answer. Back then I would say Bernadette Peters for any musical and probably David Tennant for any play. But last year I was grateful to see a streamed version of Frankenstein at the National Theatre. Now I’ve always been a Benedict Cumberpatch fan, for many years. But after witnessing him take on the role of Frankenstein and then Frankenstein’s monster I can honestly say I’ve never seen a performance like it. So I would most definitely choose him. I’m a fan of actors who become the characters in every way. He does that so effortlessly.

In reference to your answer, I was about to push you to pick just one. Unfortunately, or fortunately, Matt Henry, from my example, will be playing every role from musical theatre to play to poetry… everything. So I assume your answer to Benedict Cumberbatch is the same here?
I haven’t had a chance to see those performances, but I trust your word on them being amazing. I assume that you like Jim Carey for the same reasons? Is this right?
I think I am the opposite. I love a person that can be the character, in a way that is just them. I like to see the same production more than once with different cast members to see the change in the character. The most recent example being Beautiful the Musical. I have seen it three times now and each time had been different and the only thing that changed was the cast. Same theatre, same company, same pre-show meal and cocktail.
It is brilliant to hear from you, and a great choice for an actor.
