Hello everyone, I hope you are all well and staying safe. Welcome back to StageSideUK. Also welcome to another series of posts. This series of posts is ‘wondering wednesday’. I made this series of posts because I am a naturally nosey person and so I wonder a lot about things.
This wednesday I was wondering, how do you get to the theatre? Let’s narrow this down to a local theatre. I want to learn about the ritual of going to the theatre. I am curious to know if you have a routine. Is your local theatre a train ride away? Can you get there after a short car journey? Could you get a bus or walk to your local? For me, it depends on who I am going with. If, for example, I go to the theatre with my partner, they like to drive. So when we go to the theatre together, there is usually a rush to the theatre after work. I have never been late to a show with my partner… but there is still time.
However, if I go to the theatre with my friends, I like to get the bus or walk. I love getting all excited beforehand. Talking about if we have seen the show before, who is in it, what the aesthetic is like etc excites me too. I think the journey to the theatre tells you a lot about what the experience is going to be like. There are the odd times when the excitement on the bus doesn’t come into the performance space. However, I think that the journey usually sets the tone for the night.

I’ve seen a hell of a lot of shows over my lifetime. I’d say 80% of them I have seen alone. Now before you ready for the violins, it’s no secret I prefer it this way. Theatre for me is so much more than a jolly out to feel good. It takes me places nothing else can and gives me a motivation that I only find when I’m performing or witnessing a performance. So I don’t want anyone to ruin that for me. Now of course there is the odd exception and I’ve never had a really bad experience of someone ruining it for me. But not everyone has the same energy towards it as me and I need someone on that level. So I will usually go alone. I probably go to other cities for shows more than I do my own. It’s not that what’s on here isn’t worth seeing. I’ve seen a lot of decent stuff. But I like to get away from my city so I can truly take in the experience.

It is lovely to hear that you also go to the theatre alone. I used to go so frequently I was almost in pyjamas. I too see it as a portal to other worlds, and even to areas of our own that simply don’t exist.
It sounds like theatre really is an escape for you, especially to prefer theatre in another city, but I can not blame you. I love a theatre trip to another city or town, partially to see new things but mostly because I think each show needs a home in my mind. If they all live in one theatre, I find the memory fades a bit quicker.
