Calling all StageSider’s, Welcome back to another favourite friday. This time around, I am asking a question that makes me uncomfortable. This time around we are discussing what your favourite Pantomime is.
I don’t mean to be ‘shady’ or offend anyone, but Pantomime really does not interest me. I think I have seen maybe 3 or 4 pantomimes and I have only enjoyed one of them. Back in the good old days, I used to be in them and they were my least favourite shows to perform in. Of course there was still the thrill of being in a theatre or to be performing, but the genre just sucks the fun out of it for me (ironic I know). This is not a negative reflection of the acting skills of the performers, the musical technique or the special effects. I simply don’t engage with the genre. From the moment the curtain goes up, my brain checks out. I don’t know what it is.
What is my Favourite?
My favourite pantomime would have to be Peter Pan, which was performed at Hull Truck Theatre in December of 2019. This performance was done in a way that wasn’t overly cringey, it had cool technical elements (in terms of actual technology and performers technical skills. For example the use of acrobatics). The cast was made up of a mix of students from NAPA (Northern Academy of Performing Arts) and Hull Truck Theatre group.
This performance was a good mix of adult humour and children’s theatre whilst not relying on innuendo or dirty humour to do so. I thought the show was engaging, which is strange for me to say about a pantomime, and it was a fun night out.
It is a rare occasion, when I say I would say this pantomime again if it was on. Overall, it was just a good night of theatre and something I will remember for a while to come.
