Calling all you Side Splitting StageSider’s, welcome back to another Wondering Wednesday. This time we are talking about Stand Up comedy. This Wondering Wednesday I want to know, who was the first stand up comedian you saw.
My first time
The first stand up comedian I saw was Jimmy Carr not too long ago. It was just before the Pandemic, I went to see Jimmy Carr at Hull’s Bonus Arena. I didn’t really know what to expect going into it. It’s not like I dislike comedy. I have seen DVD stand up, and I love a good Sarah Millican set, but I had never been in the room!
I spent the night, enjoying it of course, but feeling ever so slightly uncomfortable. When you see these people on TV you have the safety to pause, walk away, make a brew and be comfortable. When you are in the room, it feels abit more formal. You can’t really ignore what they are saying and when something isn’t funny it affects you just that little bit more.
Luckily I am not offended easily and I try to find little nuggets in peoples comedy. Obviously there is a line where things just become personal or problematic, but 9 times out of 10 I will try to find the enjoyment in the experience.
One individual in the audience found a comment Jimmy made a bit too close to home, a comment about teesside. This was met by a heckle from this person and a back and forth went on for about 10 minutes. Now I don’t doubt that this happens in performances that are then put on DVD or streaming sites, obviously they just cut it out. But I just found the whole thing a bit too, cringey. Firstly, for the individual that shouted out. And then secondly for the response that Jimmy kept on giving. I felt a bit… meh about it all.
Now I like Jimmy on 8 out of 10 cats does countdown, I like him on 8 out of 10 cats. I even like the filmed specials, but I just found the live experience a bit weird. I don’t know if that is just me, probably is, but watching someone do stand up feels a bit weird in person. Perhaps I need to try more, see more comedians and experience a mix before jumping to a conclusion. What do you think?
